To have a new bookshelf is music to the ears of every book lover out there! Last week, my parents decided that I needed a new one, hence the new shiny, white bookshelf that is sitting in my room right now looking smug.
I had a lot of fun putting and organizing my books onto said bookshelf and so, I decided to write a post that includes pointers for organizing (or reorganizing) your bookshelf! Organizing a bookshelf is hard work, and while we enjoy the most of it, here are some step-by-step tips to help you out!
Step 1: Classify your books
Now, before you get all jumpy and excited about shelving your books, the first thing you should do, EVER, is to classify your books. Classifying your books is an important step because you won't have any hassle while shelving your books -which is what we all want, don't we?
You can classify your books by:
You can classify your books by:
- Genres
- Books by the same author
- Book titles in alphabetical order
- Authors' names in alphabetical order
- The size of the book -its length or width
- Versions of your books -Paperback or hardcover
Step 2: Stack your classified books into neat piles
This is a no-brainer. However, while stacking your books into neat piles, you should make sure that:
1) Keep a neat pathway to your bookshelf. Do not clutter your entire floor with books/book piles and forgetting to clear a space to your bookshelf. But if you want to hope around these book piles like a frog, be my guest.
2) Stabilize your book piles. Don't be an idiot and stack your books from the smallest to the heaviest! That will only lead to the disastrous synchronization of book piles toppling over which will damage your precious books and create more inconveniences.
3) The pile of books you want to shelve first should be closest to your bookshelf.

Step 3: Start shelving!
Now that you have all of your books in neat and organized stacks, you can start shelving them! Do keep in mind that while you shelve your books, do not try to carry too many books to your bookshelf all at once. Three to five books a trip should be enough, according to the size of your books. Remember that while this is all about efficiency, you should also focus on not damaging your books and have fun!
A few extra tips:
- If you have a lot of books to fit into one bookshelf, you can save space by stacking a series horizontally and fill any small spaces you can find by slotting in those tiny books!
- Before you shelve your books, make sure that your bookshelf is clean. No one wants to find greases on their beloved books! Therefore, before shelving your books, use a slightly damp cloth that is clean to wipe your bookshelf. Some bookshelves can't be in contact with water, so know the quality of your bookshelf before you decide whether you should use a damp cloth or a dry one.
- Be careful of any sharp protrusions that may damage your book. Sometimes these small things may cause your book to be damaged, so check your bookshelf thoroughly!
- While you shelve your books, make sure that you do not accidentally fold or bend pages of your books or the book cover.
These are some steps and tips for organizing your bookshelf! Remember to have fun! I cannot stress this enough! Put on some upbeat music and dance to it while you organize. Just make sure that you don't tip your book piles over by accident!
